Essential Home Maintenance Tips with serviceQ

Find me on:

Living in Alberta, we’re not always sure when Spring will arrive, but one thing is for certain – after a harsh winter we know our home will need a little TLC. And that’s why we’ve reached out to Qualico’s very own serviceQ department to get their top spring maintenance tips for when the snow melts.

Here are 5 items for your spring maintenance schedule, courtesy of Dawnamarie Ibuan, Manager of Experience for serviceQ.

  1. Check Your Roof & Clean the Gutters

Start by checking for any missing, loose, or damaged shingles. If you see any issues, connect with a professional to handle the repairs. And don’t forget your gutters, which can become clogged with leaves, debris, and ice, leading to leaks and water damage. Make sure they’re thoroughly cleaned out and able to direct water away from your home.

2. Examine Your Foundation

These days, winter freeze-thaw cycles have become a regular occurrence. This can lead to cracks in your foundation, and if not addressed, potential structural issues down the road. Make sure to inspect the exterior and interior of your home for visible damage. If you see any issues, contact a professional to assess the damage and complete any necessary repairs.

3. Test Your Sump Pump

As the snow melts, your sump pump may need to work overtime. Check to make sure that it is plugged in, and running properly. Do a routine check by making sure the pit is free from debris, and using a bucket, add some water to ensure the pump kicks in and pumps it out. Any issues? Contact a licensed plumber or sump pump professional.

4. Clean the Air, Clear Your Mind

Replace your furnace & HRV filters, and if applicable, your humidifier filter as well. Give your air conditioning unit a wash, or have a professional come out for a full spring service. And don’t forget to test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries, as needed.

5. Get Growing

Spring is the perfect time to give your lawn and garden some much-needed attention. Rake up leaves, remove debris, and shovel any remaining snow around trees and shrubs (they’ll enjoy a nice drink as it melts). Reseed bare patches on the lawn, and apply spring fertilizer to encourage healthy growth. You can also prune trees and shrubs to promote new growth and remove damaged branches.

Enjoy a Fresh Start

Taking care of these spring maintenance tasks can help you protect your investment and enjoy a comfortable, beautiful, and efficient home as you head into the warmer months.
